-AHMEDABAD: Sachin Tendulkar may have retired at the age of 40 after scoring 100 hundreds, but one of his oldest fans Chimanlal Bhogilal Shah just got into the 100th year of his life and is still going strong.

Spanning four generations, more than 450 members of the Ambawadi-based Shah family and friends got together on Sunday to celebrate the 100th birthday of Chimanlal, an inspiring feat in this age of junk food and chronic illnesses. Three-year-old Samaksh Shah sang the birthday jingle for his great-grandfather during a ceremony held at a hall in Gulbai Tekra.

Chimanlal cannot speak properly as old age has crept up on him, but he understands everything. He said that the most memorable moment of his life was when Narendra Modi moved to the 7 Race Course Road – the official residence of the Prime Minister of India. “He was in ICU two days before the polling day in Gujarat on April 30, but still exercised his right. He was elated when Modi was sworn in as the PM,” said a relative.

A strict vegetarian, he still gorges on his favourite sandwich dhokla thrice a week. A keen cricket lover, Chimanlal was born in 1915 and taught mathematics and English in C N Vidyalaya all his life.

“He was a strict teacher but loved all his students. Students used to come to home regularly where he offered them free tuitions. He is very social, fond of eating and hates people who are not on time,” said Nachiket Shah, grandson of Chimanlal and a businessman.
